June 2, 2003 Charlottesville, VA Found with her kitten in a trailer park, Ella had suffered the traumatic loss of the leg while escaping the trap. The injury had scarred over, but she was treated by a veterinarian because she neglected her health to take care of her kitten. The trap owner was never found. This correspondent also reported: “Another incident happened long ago in Falls Church, VA but it was unforgettable; a dog named Ruby had her tongue severed by a steel-jaw trap. December 11, 2003 NB Dudley’s right front paw was clamped in a steel trap for 5 days after he went exploring with another dog, Max, near his 30-acre home. Neighbor boys found the near-dead dog 5 days later on an island on the dry Republican River and carried him to safety. December 7, 2003 Lacey, WA On the family’s regular visit to a small patch of wilderness near Lacey, Smokey swallowed a barbed hook, baited with meat and wrapped about a pile of wood.
