In this national forest, the trap was placed on a trail near a campground where people often hiked. Pardeau was suddenly caught in the trap which was right beside the trail where people were walking. The woman reporting this incident had to hold Pardeau while his caregiver struggled to open the trap. Pardeau was in the trap for half an hour. When freed, he broke loose from the woman’s grasp and in his terror bit her hands. She “was injured worse than the dog,” and at a nearby hospital received five stitches and treatment for the numerous bites on her hands.

The eagles were caught in traps set for mink and turned in by the trappers.

An eagle eas found dead on a hiking trail. The bird had previously been found in a leghold trap in late 11/86, rehabilitated, and released. When found dead the bird’s body was in fair to poor condition. One foot was swollen and the flexor tendon was necrotic. The right foot was bumble foot. The bird’s middle toe of left foot had been amputated after trapping incident.

In an area of foothills with natural vegetation and sparse conifers, the fox was caught in a leghold trap. The fox was having seizures from the intense pain and died before help could be called. The traps were taken and hidden, so no more animals could be caught with them. Also in this area, a dog was found caught in a leghold trap, but was freed by the Humane Society.

An eagle caught in leghold trap was released by the trapper who thought the bird was “stunned”. The bird was found in the same location the next day and in obvious need of veterinarian care so the trapper captured the bird and turned him in. The eagle’s foot was severely infected and tendons were severed to the bone. Based on injuries, veterinarian estimated the bird had been in the trap 24-36 hours. The bird died 4 days later.
