PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium announced the passing of one of their largest and most loved residents, Jomo, the Zoo’s 30-year-old male eastern black rhinoceros, who was euthanized on April 16, 2026.

Jomo was one of the four eldest rhinoceros males in North America. He had been receiving treatment for several age-related conditions. Over the last weeks, Jomo’s health significantly declined with a loss of appetite and increased lethargy. Ultimately, it was determined that there were no remaining options that could improve his quality of life and humane euthanasia was the only option.

KNOXVILLE, TN – Zoo Knoxville announced the passing of its 160-year-old tortoise, Tex, on Tuesday afternoon. Tex was an Aldabra tortoise. He was the oldest resident at the zoo. Tex came to Zoo Knoxville in 1995 and spent many years at Tortoise Trails.

DAYTON, OH – A wallaby was captured after escaping a community college veterinarian technician program in Ohio and roaming around the city.

After a little over an hour of searching, the wallaby, named Klipper, was found in the late morning and was safely recovered. WKEF learned the escape occurred when someone was trying to bring Klipper to the vet tech, at which point the animal got loose. Klipper’s owner said that although his escape shocked her, she was thankful that law enforcement and the community searched for him and brought him home.

CINCINNATO, OH – A zookeeper at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens is receiving medical treatment following an incident involving a red panda Friday morning.

A zoo spokesperson says a young male red panda was startled by something while keepers were conducting their morning rounds.

One of the keepers sustained scratches to her wrist, which are considered to be minor injuries. “The keepers go in with our red pandas all the time and a minor injury during a feeding can happen,” she explained.

MILWAUKEE, WI – The Milwaukee County Zoo has made the decision to euthanize African savanna elephant Brittany, age 45, due to her recently-declining health. The procedure took place on Friday afternoon inside the Zoo’s Elephant Care Center. Brittany arrived at MCZ in June 2001 from Greenville Zoo in South Carolina and was one of the longest-tenured residents here.
