Sharks

Sharks are vital to our oceans. While popular culture has given them a frightening reputation, in reality sharks are key to the survival of healthy marine ecosystems. There are more than 500 species of sharks, and they are in every ocean habitat across the globe. Sadly, their numbers are decreasing.

Around 100 million sharks are killed by humans each year. Sharks are fished for commercial purposes and their parts, especially their fins, are illegally traded. Shark finning is the extraordinarily cruel practice of cutting the fin off the animals, usually while alive, and tossing the shark back to the sea to drown or bleed to death.

You can help protect these animals by symbolically adopting a shark! Your adoption gift will support Born Free USA’s work to fight illegal wildlife trafficking and support efforts to end the shark fin trade. For only $60 a year or $7 a month, you can create a brighter future for these animals.

In addition to knowing you are protecting this species, you will receive an adoption package that includes an adoption certificate, a species information sheet, a photo of a shark in the wild, updates about our campaigns work, and a plush shark toy. You can also opt to maximize your adoption gift by choosing to receive adoption materials (minus the plush toy) via email.
