Anna

Anna was rescued from a squalid roadside zoo in late 2019 and came to live at the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in January 2020. She arrived with her elderly friend, Mrs. Wilkin, and was able to experience life outside of a small, dark cage for the first time in her life. Mrs. Wilkin passed away in early 2021 due to age related ailments. Anna now lives with her new best friend, a macaque named Professor.

Anna is a shy and gentle monkey who spends her time quietly foraging and sitting in the sun in her outdoor enclosure. Anna demonstrates some behaviors that speak to her past trauma. She can sometimes be seen "zoning out" and putting the toes of her back foot in her ear, or "saluting" by holding her hand up against the side of her face. This may look comical but is known as a stereotypical behavior and is caused by compounded stress. We hope that, as time goes on and Anna feels safer and more secure in her new home that these behaviors will diminish and she will thrive in her new life.

You can help to support Anna in her journey of recovery by adopting her today. Your support will help to provide lifelong care to her and the other animals resident at our sanctuary.

If you adopt Anna, consider also adopting Violet, another monkey rescued from the same roadside zoo.
