Two Zookeepers Injured in Wolf Attack at Washington Park Zoo
Summary:
MICHIGAN CITY, IN – Two Washington Park Zoo employees were taken to the hospital Wednesday morning after they were attacked by wolves. First responders were called to the zoo around 8 a.m. and found two wolves secured in small cages and howling in different areas of the exhibit.
According to Michigan City Police, the most seriously hurt victim, a 39-year-old woman, suffered numerous injuries across her entire body and was found on the floor. Another zookeeper was still inside the exhibit with a third howling wolf.
Firefighters rescued her by climbing on the roof of a nearby building and lowering a ladder into the exhibit. Michigan City Fire Department Training Officer William Sonntag assisted with treating her wounds before she was taken to the hospital. Sonntag said the other zookeeper suffered a single bite to one of her arms. Officials say the attack happened after one of the zookeepers asked the other to come into the exhibit and help.
The Washington Park Zoo released a statement on social media, saying that a wolf had passed away overnight from natural causes. They say the attack happened after that loss.
