Born Free USA Opposes Proposed Changes to Habitat Protection under the ESA

by Born Free USA in ESA

Born Free USA strongly opposes the Trump administration’s proposal to limit Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections only to habitats that currently support species, excluding areas that once supported species and ones that could be protected to provide for future species recovery.

This proposal is especially troubling given the threat of climate change to wildlife species, as it precludes protecting areas that animals may need to move into in response to changing climate conditions in their current habitats.

Born Free USA CEO, Angela Grimes, says, “The Trump administration is doing its utmost to weaken the Endangered Species Act, all in the name of economic expansion and financial gain. But, the ESA was signed into law to protect threatened wildlife, something the vast majority of Americans support, and that is impossible unless we also fully protect wildlife habitats.”

Born Free USA urges the Trump administration not to enact this harmful proposal and to uphold the protections currently afforded habitats under the ESA.
