“What we need are positive images of wildlife…”

Born Free President, Will Travers OBE, responded to the recent decision of Moonpig, a major greeting card company, to stop selling cards with images of captive apes. The decision came following outcry by the animal welfare community, which asserted that images of chimpanzees and other apes dressed in costumes and in unnatural settings fuel the exotic pet trade and inhibit conservation. Will Travers commented that “What we need are positive images of wildlife, set with the in the context of their natural environment wherever possible…” and added that the “days of chimps tea parties and boxing orangutans are well and truly over.”
