Iowa gets ‘F’ for Animal Trapping Rules

Born Free USA launched its 2017 Trapping Report, which assigns a letter grade to each state based on the existence and effectiveness of the state’s animal trapping regulations on animal welfare, wildlife conservation, and public safety. Iowa scored an “F” for its lack of key regulations, including allowing snares, leghold, and Conibear traps and allowing bobcats and otters to be trapped. Additionally, Iowa does not regulate how trappers must kill trapped animals, leading to greater suffering as animals are drowned and clubbed to death. And, as Prashant Khetan, Born Free USA CEO and General Counsel, points out, most of the trapping activities in Iowa are driven by profit.
