Appeals Court Upholds Federal Protections for Gray Wolves in the Great Lakes Region

in Animal News

On Tuesday, August 1, a Washington, D.C. appeals court reaffirmed a 2014 decision that upheld Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the Great Lakes region. Working with a coalition of other wildlife groups, Born Free USA brought a lawsuit against the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 2011, after the agendy decided to remove federal protections from gray wolves in this region. In 2014, the D.C. District Court ruled in favor of Born Free USA and our partner organizations, overturning the USFWS delisting decision. This week’s appeals court ruling reaffirms the 2014 decision, maintaining federal protections for wolves and blocking states from opening sport hunting and commercial trapping seasons targeting them!
