Bill Description:
This bill bans the importation or private possession of certain constrictor and venomous snakes.[teaserbreak]
Animal sanctuaries, zoos, aquariums, wildlife research centers, scientific organizations, and medical research facilities as defined in the Animal Welfare Act are exempt from this prohibition, because they do not qualify as “private” owners.
Background:
Currently, importation or private possession of constrictor snakes under 8 feet long is not regulated, and importation or private possession of constrictor snakes over 8 feet long is allowed with a permit from the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (DWF). Importation or private possession of venomous snakes is currently allowed with a permit from the DWF.
