S 552 Protects Calves and Pregnant Pigs [2005]

Bill Description: This bill would outlaw cruel veal crates, which is the practice of chaining or tethering a calf in a small, confined area that does not allow the calf to move or groom itself. The bill also would require that calves be fed a diet containing sufficient iron so that they are not induced to become anemic to create fatty, pale veal meat. Gestation crates — the confinement of pregnant pigs in small enclosures in a continual cycle of gestation — also would be prohibited by this bill.

This is common sense legislation that prevents intolerable cruelty. Surely, requiring that calves and pregnant pigs be given at least enough space to groom themselves and turn around is not too much to ask.
