What are you afraid of? Could it be the Truth?

I am always amazed how defensive people get when you try to talk to them or hand them information about how animals are treated in various industries. At some level these people are aware of the inherent cruelty involved in the particular issue being discussed or they would not be so defensive about it.

For example, I was handing out information to people attending the Ringling Bros. circus about how they mistreat their animals and some of the patrons chimed back that “they do not want to hear it,” “they know all about it already,” or “get a life.” Many find it necessary to yell at you as well. The reality is that one only gets worked up about these things if it has struck a chord with them because at some level they know about the abuse and choose to ignore it.

Several of the patrons told me that they were aware that the animals in circuses were mistreated — either they read articles, watched videos, etc. — but that they were going to the show because they wanted to take their grandchild or child to the circus. This excuse probably saddens me the most because they are consciously exposing their children to the mistreatment of animals. What kind of message are they sending their children — that as long as you enjoy the show it is ok that the animals are mistreated?

On a more encouraging note, the attendance at the shows we have leafleted at thus far in Sacramento is noticeably down. As more news articles appear such as the one from the Sacramento Bee on September 11, the more educated people get about the truth behind the Big Top.

The truth about what happens behind the Big Top as well as in other animal industries is only a click away. Do your research ... we are not making the facts up here ... there is documented evidence about how the circus trains their animals, there is documented evidence about what happens on factory farms, there is documented evidence about the fur industry ... and the list goes on and on.

Don’t be afraid to be educated ... don’t be afraid to stand up for the animals ... their only voice is yours.

Blogging off,

Nicole
