When we received a call from one of our members letting us know that about 200 feral cats were going to be trapped with leghold traps and hunted with dogs, I was shocked. I actually thought that the caller had misunderstood the situation. I was even more surprised when I was told that the cats were here in California. After all, we banned leghold traps in California 10 years ago.
I must admit to being quite heartsick when I did some investigating and quickly realized that the caller was right.
I discovered that, while the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has been busily killing cats for some time now, the use of leghold traps and hunters with dogs is new. And, if allowed to occur, will set a sad precedent in the U.S. We are sinking to a new low, it appears.
Fish & Wildlife claims that this extremely cruel treatment of the cats is necessary to protect wild animals. However, they also admit that threatened or endangered species are likely to be captured in the leghold traps, which are infamously unable to distinguish between the paw, foot or head of one animal versus that of another. Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute has a chart of the animals maimed or killed by these and other traps.
We're doing all that we can to challenge this awful plan. And we're keeping our fingers (and paws) crossed that Fish & Wildlife comes to its senses.
