Last week’s news that a dolphin named “Sharky” died at SeaWorld while performing stunts in a show really hit me hard. I grew up near the ocean and as an avid scuba diver, surfer, and beachcomber, I’m fascinated by that world and get really offended by places that rip animals from such a vast, complicated, delicate world (that we know next to nothing about) to put them in a pool and make them do stupid tricks.
“SeaWorld officials say nothing like this has ever happened before and they're doing whatever it takes to make sure it doesn't happen again.”
SeaWorld may not have had a dolphin die in a mid-air collision before, but many animals die in their care for the simple reason that they are not likely to survive captivity. Some of these deaths, like Sparky's, have been very public and very graphic.
If SeaWorld really was willing to do “whatever it takes,” it would stop these shows, stop capturing animals from the wild, and redirect the bounty of its deep pockets to helping fix the problems that have put our oceans and marine life in the dire situation they are in right now.
I say, put your money where your mouth is already!
