Thrill Kill: Recreational Animal Slaughter in the U.S. (2023)

Exploring killing contests in which competitors kill as many animals as possible for prize money, the canned trophy hunting of non-native species – some of them extinct in the wild, and the shooting of feral pigs from helicopters as an “experience,” Thrill Kill: Recreational Animal Slaughter in the U.S., explores the violent and disturbing background to some of today’s most egregious hunting practices, using Texas – the epicenter of thrill killing in the U.S. – as a case study.

The report calls for states to ban animal killing contests and other recreational animal slaughter; reconfigure existing popular contests into events that promote animal welfare and compassion; and investigate non-lethal methods of wildlife control.

The report also calls on federal authorities to relist exotic species that are commonly trophy hunted on ranches in the U.S. under the Endangered Species Act and to resist efforts to delist other threatened exotic species for the purposes of trophy hunting.
