Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary

Some people monkey around a little, some people monkey around a lot, and then there's Tim. He's a prince among primates, presiding over hundreds of fellow bipeds in the often-brutal Texas outdoors. There's no ape escape for Tim and his crew, but no matter. They love to help macaques, baboons and vervets live out their lives with as much freedom as possible. And like peeling a banana, Tim's blogs take you to the good stuff inside — with a steady supplement of Texas weather updates, of course!

His Name’s Grinch, But He’ll Make You Smile

Published: 12/16/10

Grinch, who is featured this month in our Adopt a Primate program, came to us from a university laboratory in the summer of 2006 along with 10 other bonnet macaques who were being retired. Born in 1997, Grinch is in the prime of his life and after only a few short months with us he quickly gained body mass and agility in his new outdoor environment.

Grinch is quite a fan of the lady monkeys — and they of him. He spends a considerable amount of time each day grooming, resting or playing with the females in his group. Cool nights find them all huddled together in one warm lump, with Grinch's long face and distinct hairdo peeking over the heads of his admirers.

Grinch also has shown an ability to not only tolerate but welcome other males into his group. Recently, when fighting broke out among the males next door, he showed great interest in Marco and Le Monde, and when we let them over he went straight over to them and initiated a grooming session with each one in turn. Now there's an even bigger huddle at night.

Grinch loves peanuts and sunflower seeds and will literally chase us around the enclosure trying to tease some more of his favorite treats from us. He isn't without manners, though, and will sit quietly munching while the girls gather around for their share.

We have Grinch and five others in our Adopt a Primate program. With your $52 annual donation you can bring a lot of holiday cheer to Grinch and the hundreds of other monkeys we care for at our Texas sanctuary. Adopt Grinch before year’s end and you will receive his photograph in a holiday ornament frame. And if you’re looking for a truly compassionate Christmas gift, “give” Grinch to a loved one with our Gift Adoption program! (Remember, all donations to Born Free USA are tax-deductible.)

Thank you for your continued support, and on behalf of the animals, staff and volunteers I wish you happy holidays and a joyous and fulfilling new year.

Until next time,
