Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary
Some people monkey around a little, some people monkey around a lot, and then there's Tim. He's a prince among primates, presiding over hundreds of fellow bipeds in the often-brutal Texas outdoors. There's no ape escape for Tim and his crew, but no matter. They love to help macaques, baboons and vervets live out their lives with as much freedom as possible. And like peeling a banana, Tim's blogs take you to the good stuff inside — with a steady supplement of Texas weather updates, of course!
While most of the country seems to have suffered severe winter storms over the holiday period, we got off lightly with just a couple of cool days before the temperatures hit the 80s again. What a difference the sunshine makes to the monkeys’ daily lives (and to us humans)! They so enjoy just soaking it up, lying around lazily, sleeping and grooming each other.
A bumper food week, which means we have been able to give out lots of avocados, grapes, and mangos over the holiday.
Introductions between individuals can sometimes take longer than expected. This has been the case with the introduction between McKenzie, Oscar, and Ollie with Loekey, the recent arrival. A second attempt over the weekend has been more positive and we are hopeful that this time the group dynamics will be smooth. It has certainly been very rewarding to watch Loekey and Ollie spending time together. Ollie is a shy, timid individual who tends to be dominated by McKenzie. However, it looks like Loekey may help to bring Ollie out of himself.
Until next week,
