California children’s book author and Boston printing company founder share passion for conservation and Indonesia.

Boston, MA — Six years ago while traveling in Indonesia, Monica Engebretson, who works with the wildlife advocacy and conservation group Born Free USA, aided in the release of a wild-caught parrot — a rainbow lorikeet — that had been chained to a perch for over a year (a common practice in Indonesia). Monica was so touched by the experience, she wrote a children’s book manuscript based on it. After shopping the manuscript around for several years, the project received funding and support from several animal welfare and conservation organizations and the book, Lucky, was self-published to rave reviews.

Federal Court Blocks Canned Hunting of Endangered Species

Washington, DC — In a blow to trophy hunting groups like Safari Club International, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia today struck down a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rule allowing sport-hunting of endangered antelopes at “canned” hunting facilities. Safari Club and other trophy hunting advocates intervened in the case, and argued in favor of legalizing the shooting of endangered animals trapped in enclosures.

Famed oceanographer joins Born Free USA in opposing hotel’s dolphin import request

Las Vegas, NV — Renowned marine researcher, educator, and environmentalist, Jean-Michel Cousteau has joined Born Free USA and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) in opposition to the Mirage hotel’s April 27, 2009 request to import two bottlenose dolphins. In light of the June 4, 2009 death of yet another dolphin in the Mirage hotel’s care, the groups argue that importation to the hotel’s pool is nothing more than a “death sentence” for dolphins.

Wildlife Protection Groups Challenge Great Lakes Wolf Delisting

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, five wildlife protection groups filed a complaint in Federal District Court challenging the removal of Endangered Species Act protections for gray wolves in the western Great Lakes region. The non-profit organizations – the Humane Society of the United States, the Center for Biological Diversity, Help Our Wolves Live, Friends of Animals and Their Environment, and Born Free USA – have also asked the court to issue an immediate injunction to halt the killing of wolves pending resolution of the case.

Oregon House passes bill to phase out keeping wild animals as pets

Salem, OR — Born Free USA, The Humane Society of the United States, and the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) applaud the Oregon House of Representatives for passing legislation to prohibit the keeping of certain wild animals as pets. The bill, S.B. 391, passed the House Wednesday by a vote of 43 to 15. It was approved by the state Senate in March. The bill returns to the Senate for a final vote before being sent to Gov. Ted Kulongoski for his signature.
