Wednesday, June 1, 2011, marked the passing of the 90-day deadline for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make its initial response to a petition seeking protection for African lions under the Endangered Species Act. The petition was filed on March 1 by a coalition of wildlife groups including Born Free USA/Born Free Foundation, Defenders of Wildlife and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW).
Born Free USA Petitions State’s Game Commission to Change Animal Trapping Regulations
On May 10, 2011, Born Free USA, a leader in animal welfare and wildlife conservation, petitioned the Pennsylvania Game Commission to prohibit the use of body-gripping and Conibear traps by animal trappers on public lands, and to prohibit the use of cable restraints (“snares”) altogether. The petition also asks that trappers be required to employ an efficient and less-cruel method of killing trapped animals; to report the number and type of non-targeted animals caught by traps (often cats and dogs); and for traps to be checked at least once every 24 hours.

Born Free USA has helped draft a landmark bill introduced Monday (Assembly Bill 6291/Senate Bill 3858) that would protect bears from poaching and profiteering by prohibiting the commercial trade in bear gallbladders and bile in New York state.
