In the spirit of Halloween, we decided to do something special for the primates to celebrate! You may not know this, but many of the primates here love the taste and texture of raw pumpkin, and pumpkin seeds are an especially delicious and nutritious snack!
Thanks to the help of our friends and neighbors in New Braunfels, Texas and a generous donation from HEB store #74, we were able to purchase thirteen pumpkins for the primates to enjoy. We also wanted to make this an opportunity to educate the public about the important work we do at the Sanctuary.
Paula Pebsworth, a local primatologist, graciously took time out of her busy schedule to speak to the local New Braunfels chapter of Jane Goodall's Roots and Shoots. She taught the children, ages two to fourteen, about the plight of primates in the wild and in captivity, and gave suggestions about how to best help them. Afterwards, the children used non-toxic paint to give the pumpkins abstract designs and spooky Halloween messages. Paula explained that, not only will these pumpkins provide the monkeys with nutrition, but the painted designs will also provide valuable enrichment for them.
Paula was right! The primates loved the pumpkins and were very excited to receive their Halloween treats. To see pictures of the monkeys enjoying some golden goodness, visit our Sanctuary photo gallery or watch the video.
On behalf of all the monkeys at the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary, we wish all of our friends a happy Halloween filled with tricks and treats. You can help the primates enjoy more treats this Halloween by making a donation to the Sanctuary! Your donation will help ensure that they receive fresh produce all winter long.
