A bill has just hit Governor Pat Quinn’s desk that would protect three magnificent Illinois species: the gray wolf, the American black bear, and the cougar. This bill has come so far—passing through gridlock in the state legislature—and we need to ensure that it clears this final hurdle. Contact the governor today asking him to sign S.B. 3049!
Your hard work and dedicated activism have paid off! On June 4, the California Fish and Game Commission voted to list the gray wolf under the state’s Endangered Species Act. Thank you to everyone who wrote to the Commission or attended the meeting in person. This victory couldn’t have happened without your support and advocacy!
And, biologists discovered that the lone wolf who has been wandering into northern California, OR-7, has brand new pups. OR-7’s offspring have the potential to establish California’s first wolf pack in 90 years.
When we were alerted to the fact that there was a small group of “rogue” lions in Cameroon, the alarm bell was sounded. These lions would be considered dangerous; they kill livestock, and they run the risk of being murdered themselves in retaliation. Our job was to capture the lions and relocate them to a less populated area within Cameroon.
We received a report from the field that we’ve achieved initial success.
Truck stop owner Michael Sandlin has imprisoned a tiger named Tony for more than a decade. We need you to send a letter to Governor Bobby Jindal to remind him that private ownership of big cats exists to protect both animals and humans.
H. 7838, which would ban the use of toxic lead in hunting ammunition in Rhode Island, received a hearing in the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. But, if the bill does not pass before the last day—now June 20—it will be dead.
We need you to CALL the chairman of the House committee to remind him to act on this crucial bill NOW. The Chairman is Rep. Arthur Handy, and his office number is (401) 785-8996. This call will be very easy and should last about one minute. Simply say “Hi, my name is __ and I am a Rhode Island resident. I would like you to please bring H. 7838 to a committee vote immediately.”
And, after you call, you can send a follow-up message to the committee members here.

While monetary gifts to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary are vital to our caring for the primates, donations of items found on the Sanctuary Wish List are a welcome addition. The monkeys particularly love these shade sails.
The Humane Care for Primates Act (H.R. 3556) would amend Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regulations to allow accredited sanctuaries to import primates from abroad. Tell your representative to support it here!
