On Monday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill (S.B. 3049) that will protect three magnificent Illinois species: the gray wolf, the American black bear, and the cougar. This bill adds these imperiled species to the list of protected species under the Illinois Wildlife Act. Thank the Governor for his compassionate action!
Our brand new report, Out of Africa: Mapping the Global Trade in Illicit Elephant Ivory, reveals the global movement of ivory in startling detail, and identifies the various “chokepoints” through which illicit ivory passes. This is an intricate, complex global trade that involves organized criminal syndicates, both in Africa and in Asia. It involves financiers who drive the poaching, consolidators who bundle the ivory, companies that package and move the ivory, and wholesalers who market the ivory.
Some state legislators, at the behest of hunting and trapping lobby groups, are making a bid to decimate Michigan wolf populations and remove your rights as voters. A new bill, deceptively titled the "Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act," is currently under consideration. Please contact your state Representative and ask him or her to oppose this dangerous and unjust bill!
The deceptively optimistic-sounding “Lawful Ivory Protection Act of 2014” (H.R. 5052/S. 2587) undermines the ability of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to establish regulations that prohibit or restrict the possession, sale, or transportation of elephant ivory within the U.S., as long as that ivory was lawfully imported. Schedule a meeting with your Representative to discuss this issue. Click the "Read More" link below for more details (and materials).
New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo signed TWO compassionate bills into law this week! S. 6903 prohibits public contact with big cats. Thank the Governor for ensuring that big cats won’t be mistreated for hands-on profit and entertainment anymore! Meanwhile, A. 10143 will ban the sale of ivory and rhino horn, with exceptions. Thank Governor Cuomo for taking this step to combat poaching.
Despite our efforts thus far, the Maryland Renaissance Festival continues to offer cruel elephant and camel rides. Join us this Saturday, August 23 for a peaceful protest at the Maryland Renaissance Festival! Click the "Read More" link below for more details.
An Idaho hunting group (Idaho for Wildlife) wants to sponsor a predator killing contest across 3 million acres of public lands—for the next five winters. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is currently seeking input on this proposal in order to craft an Environmental Assessment. Urge the BLM to deny Idaho for Wildlife's request for a special recreation permit. Please make your voice heard by August 18!
A proposal, now in the hands of Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP), could permit a company to open a 150-foot by 140-foot bobcat fur farming facility in Fergus County, Montana. FWP has announced a public comment period, and you can help defeat this proposal by submitting your comment by August 29.
