Born Free USA Senior Program Associate Monica Engebretson joined colleagues from Trap Free New Mexico on an eight-city swing to highlight the dangers associated with trapping on lands. "The Troubles with Trapping" tour's goal was to raise awareness, capture the attention of decision-makers and move New Mexico a step closer to having trap-free public lands.

We need your help to defeat an unnecessary and irresponsible bill pending in Congress (H.R. 4089) that undermines federal protection for polar bears (an officially designated "threatened species"). This legislation also would allow recreational hunting on additional federal lands, thereby putting more wildlife at risk.

Born Free USA is working on an important congressional initiative to help protect big cats and the people who come near them. Sponsored by U.S. Reps. Buck McKeon (R-CA) and Loretta Sanchez (D-CA), the "Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act" (H.R. 4122) prohibits future possession and breeding of lions, tigers and other big cats in the exotic "pet" trade. The bill also would require all current "owners" to register their big cats with the federal government. Please ask your U.S. representative to co-sponsor the bill today.

The cramped quarters of captive zoo animals provide visitors with seconds of entertainment and the animals a lifetime of unnatural living. Zoos neither educate nor conserve wildlife where they belong — in the wild. One way we address this issue is through our Zoo Check campaign, in which our supporters print out our Zoo Check form, visit their local zoo, record their observations of the caged animals' living conditions, and return the completed form to us.
