California: AB 1213: The Bobcat Protection Act [2013]

Bill description: This bill would prohibit the commercial trapping of bobcats in California, along with the commercial sale and export of bobcat pelts. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's current authority to issue depredation permits for bobcats would not be affected. Hunting of bobcats consistent with existing law and regulations would still be allowed in California.

California: AB 339 Prohibits the Sale of Animals at Flea Markets and Swap Meets [2013]

Bill description: This bill, sponsored by Born Free USA and the State Humane Association of California, will prohibit the sale of animals at swap meets and flea markets and thereby prevent the suffering of animals, protect consumers and eliminate the public health and safety risks and risks of other disease outbreaks associated with such sale situations.

New Mexico: New Mexico Bill Restricting Poisons, Traps Fails

The House Energy and Natural Resources Committee failed to pass House Bill 579, a bill amended to restrict poisons and traps on public lands, on March 4 by a vote of 6 to 5 after three days of spirited hearings. The New Mexico Wildlife Protection & Public Safety Act would have curbed the cull of New Mexico’s native wildlife for the profit of a few. Find out more here.

Oregon: SB 494 Limits the Allowable Uses of Traps

Update: This bill died in the Environment and Natural Resources Committee on 7/8/13.

Description: Prohibits the use of body-gripping traps to trap animals (with a few exceptions). SB 494 will ban trapping for recreation and commerce in fur, and impose reasonable restrictions to help protect pets and wildlife from these cruel and indiscriminate devices.

Texas: HB 852 Bans the Trade of Shark Fins

Update: This bill passed the House of Representatives and the Senate Natural Resources Committee, but failed to come up for a Senate floor vote and died on 5/21/13.

Description: HB 852 bans the sale, trade or possession of shark fin.

Pennsylvania: S.B. 340 Restricts Sale, Trade of Shark Fins

Bill Description:
SB 340 bans the sale and trade of shark fins, with exceptions for FDA-approved drugs, taxidermy, and fins possessed prior to Sept. 2, 2012. Pennsylvania residents would also still be allowed to posses shark fins obtained legally out of state.
