Bill description: This bill, sponsored by Born Free USA and The Humane Society of the United States, will ban the most inhumane wildlife trapping practices decrease the chances of family dogs and being inadvertently killed in traps.

California: AB 711 Would Phase Out Lead in Ammunition [2013]

Update (Oct. 11, 2013): This bill was signed into law by the governor.

Bill description: This bill would phase in a requirement that non-lead ammunition be used in hunting statewide in California by July 2016. Lead has been widely known as a toxin for more than 2,000 years. The Centers for Disease Control reports there is no safe level of lead for humans.

Illinois: HB 2991: Lion Meat Act [2013]

Update: This bill failed to pass in 2013. It was reintroduced in 2014 as HB 5386.

Bill description: This bill, sponsored by Born Free USA, creates the Lion Meat Act. It provides that it is unlawful for any person to slaughter a lion or for any person to possess, breed, import or export from this state, buy or sell lions for the purpose of slaughter. It provides that it is unlawful to commercialize lion meat. It authorizes the Department of Agriculture to adopt and enforce any rules necessary to carry out the provisions of the act. And it provides that whoever violates any provision of the act shall be guilty of a Class A misdemeanor. Upon passage the bill would take effect immediately.

Missouri: Missouri's S.B. 149 Helps Primates

Update: This bill died in 2013.

Bill description: This bill amends the Large Carnivore Act and creates the Non-Human Primate Act. The changes to the Large Carnivore Act will streamline the process for registering large carnivores, helping the state Department of Agriculture to better enforce permitting laws. The Non-Human Primate Act will ban the possession of baboons and great apes.

Nevada: SB 213 Tightens Rules on Trapping

Update: This bill passed and was signed into law by the governor on 5/28/13.

Bill description: Requires the registration of each trap, snare, poisoning device or similar device used in the taking of wild mammals; authorizes the removal or disturbance of a trap, snare, poisoning device or similar device under certain circumstances; requires the marking of a trap, snare, poisoning device or similar device with a warning flag; increases the frequency of required visits for a trap to 24 hours (current requirement is 96 hours).

California: SB 132 Helps Mountain Lions [2013]

Update (Sept. 6, 2013): This bill was signed into law by the governor.

Bill description: This bill would require nonlethal procedures, as defined, to be used when removing or taking any mountain lion perceived to be an imminent threat to public health or safety unless the mountain lion can reasonably be expected to cause immediate death or physical harm. This bill would authorize the department or an appropriate local agency to partner with qualified individuals, educational institutions, governmental agencies or nongovernmental organizations to implement nonlethal procedures.
