Virginia: H.B. 1159 Protects Sharks

Bill description: This bill would ban the shark fin trade in Virginia.

Vermont: H.528 Would End the Bear Gallbladder and Bile Trade (UPDATE)

Update (August 2012): The bill did not pass this year.

Bill description: This bill was primarily drafted by Born Free USA and would make it illegal to buy, sell or receive bear gallbladders or bear bile or their derivatives. Transporting or delivering these products with the intent to sell them also would be prohibited. At the request of the Vermont Department of Fish and Game, the bill also prohibits the intentional feeding of bears, an issue that also imperils black bears throughout the state.

New York: SB 6166 Weakens Requirements for Traps Set in Water

Washington: HB 1137 Weakens Prohibitions on Use of Body-Gripping Traps (UPDATED)

Bill description: House Bill 1137 would greatly undermine 2000’s Ballot Initiative 713, which banned the use of body-gripping traps for recreation and commerce in fur.

New York: A. 5951 Restricts Sport Trapping (UPDATED)

Update (August 2012): The bill died in committee.

Bill description: This bill prohibits people who operate, own or manage facilities that habor fox, otter, beaver or muskrat for trapping from trapping the animals for sport.
