New Jersey: S945 Prevention of Illegal Trade in Tigers; Requirements for Possession [2012]

Update (8/20/12): This bill was vetoed by the governor, and the legislature did not attempt to overturn the veto.

Bill description: This bill would require individuals to register and microchip any tiger they possess and establishes a state tiger registration and accounting system as well as methods of disposal to prevent the illegal trade of tigers and their parts.

Hawaii: SB 2232/HB 2296 Combats the Bear Parts Trade [2012]

Update (August 2012): The bill has been signed into law.

Update (July 2012): This bill has passed both houses of the state Legislature and awaits the signature of Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who has declared that he will sign it into law.

Bill description: This bill was drafted by Born Free USA. It would make it illegal to purchase, sell, transport or deliver any product, item or substance containing, labeled or advertised as containing bear gallbladder or bile.

Missouri: SB 666 Creates the Nonhuman Primate Act [2012]

Update (May 2012): The Missouri 2012 legislative session has adjourned and this bill is no longer active.

Bill description: This bill would prohibit people from owning, keeping or otherwise privately possessing non-human primates without a permit and without complying with specific animal welfare and public safety requirements. At the request of Born Free USA, the bill would exempt sanctuaries accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries.


Massachusetts: SB 1706 Helps Protect Captive Elephants [2012]

Update (August 2012): The bill did not pass this year.

Bill description: This bill would prohibit any person who houses, possesses or travels with elephants utilized in traveling shows from using any implement that would result in physical harm or from keeping the elephants constantly restrained by chain or similar device.


Indiana: HB 1288 Restricts Possession of Exotic Animals as 'Pets' [2012]

Update (August 2012): The bill did not pass this year.

Bill description: This bill would prohibit a person from acquiring or breeding a dangerous wild animal after July 1, 2012. Current possessors would need to a permit and follow certain animal care and public safety requirements.

Mississippi: SB 2167 Limits Sizes of Conibear and Body-Gripping Traps [2012]

Update (March, 2012): This bill died in committee.

Bill description: This bill would prohibit using a Conibear or body-gripping trap with an inside diameter jaw spread exceeding 6 inches on public lands.
