California: AB 1589 Protects State Parks [2012]

Update (Sept. 25, 2012): This bill was signed into law by the governor.

Bill description: This bill sets a guaranteed level of state funding for parks and lowers the number of parks that can be closed to 25. Closed parks invite poachers, off-road vehicles and littering.

Bill description: This bill would prohibit the possession, sale, offer for sale, trade or distribution of shark fins.

Connecticut: HB 5324 Restricts Placement of Leghold Traps [2012]

Update (March 2012): This bill is no longer active. The Select Committee on Environment decided not to take up the bill.

Bill description: This bill was initiated by Born Free USA and would help safeguard children and companion animals from leghold traps by restricting where leghold traps are placed in areas where both are likely to be present and requiring reporting of all incidents of nontarget trapping.

Mississippi: HB 1932/S2167 Establishes Certain Trapping Restrictions (UPDATED)

Update (March 2012): This bill died in committee and is no longer active.

Bill description: This bill prohibits use of a Conibear or body-gripping trap with an inside diameter jaw spread exceeding 6 inches on land within public lands. Conibear or body-gripping traps with an inside diameter jaw spread exceeding 6 inches may be used only in water on public lands.

Idaho: SB 1305/H458 Extends Wolf Hunting/Trapping Law [2012]

Update: Gov. C.L. "Butch" Otter signed the bill into law on April 3, 2012.

Bill description: This bill amends existing law relating to the control of depredation of wolves to provide that within a specified time period of livestock or domestic animals being molested or attacked, the owner and their employees and agents may control the wolf or wolves from a motorized vehicle at any time of the day or night.

Minnesota: S.F. 1736 Establishes Certain Trapping Restrictions (UPDATED)

Update (August 2012): The bill did not pass this year.

Bill description: This bill prohibits setting a body-gripping Conibear trap unless it is at least 5 feet above the ground, placed in a manner that will protect domestic dogs, or is completely submerged in water.
