State: HB 5324 Restricts Placement of Leghold Traps

Bill description: This bill was initiated by Born Free USA and would help safeguard children and companion animals from leghold traps by restricting where leghold traps are placed in areas where both are likely to be present and requiring reporting of all incidents of nontarget trapping.

Bill description: This bill is based on the Hawaii law and would prohibit the sale, offer/exposure for sale, trade or distribution of shark fins.


Ohio: HB 483/SB 310 Establishes Restrictions for Possession of Exotics [2012]

Update: This bill was signed into law on June 5, 2012!

Bill description: This bill, The Dangerous Wild Animal Act, prohibits individuals from possessing many dangerous and exotic animals and place stringent restrictions on current "owners."


Pennsylvania: HB 2063 Would Ban Private Possession of Crocodilians [2012]

Update (August 2012): The bill did not pass this year.

Bill description: This bill was introduced at the urging of Born Free USA and would ban private possession of crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, caimans and gavials) in Pennsylvania by prohibiting people from purchasing, selling, trading or offering them for sale.


California: AB 2179 Increases Ability to Prosecute and Penalize for Wildlife Crimes [2012]

Update (September 2012): Unfortunately, this bill was defeated on the Senate floor.

Bill description: Would increase the ability of the Department of Fish and Game to prosecute and penalize those who violate Fish and Game code (i.e., laws that protect wildlife). The provisions of this bill that would increase enforcement authority for violations of the law are expected to also have a deterrent effect, thereby increasing compliance with wildlife laws and reducing wildlife law enforcement burden. This bill is co-sponsored by Born Free USA and the San Francisco Wildlife Center.

California: AB 2283 Renames Department of Fish and Game to Department Fish and Wildlife [2012]

Update (August 2012): This bill failed to pass before the legislative deadline, and is now dead.

Bill description: Renames the Department of Fish and Game to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and would make related changes. The bill would prohibit existing supplies, forms, insignias, signs, logos, uniforms or emblems from being destroyed or changed as a result of changing the name of the Department of Fish and Game to the Department of Fish and Wildlife, and would require their continued use until exhausted or unserviceable.
