S. 2012/A. 3128 Prohibits the Trade of Ivory and Rhino Horn

Born Free USA Position: SUPPORT

Update (August 5, 2014): Victory! This bill was signed into law by Governor Christie. Read our press release here.

Bill Description:
This bill prohibits the sale, purchase, or barter of ivory or rhinoceros horn and items containing ivory or rhinoceros horn, with limited exceptions.

“Ivory” is defined as any tooth or tusk from an elephant, hippopotamus, mammoth, narwhal, walrus, or whale, or any product made from these materials. “Rhinoceros horn” means the horn, or any piece of horn, of any species of rhinoceros.

Exceptions: These prohibitions do not apply where the import is expressly authorized by federal license or permit. It also allows use for bona fide scientific and educational purposes.

Background:
Check out the Bloody Ivory website for details on the tragic elephant slaughter and illegal ivory trade.
And be sure to read the summary of our Ivory’s Curse report, which details the groundbreaking information uncovered by our investigation of illegal wildlife trafficking in Africa.
