New York Legislation
Born Free USA Position: SUPPORT
Update: Victory! This bill was signed into law by Governor Cuomo on August 11, 2014. Read our press release here.
It amends the Environmental Conservation Law by stipulating that direct contact between the public and big cats is prohibited. Direct contact includes activities such as playing with a big cat or having a photograph taken with a big cat in the absence of a permanent physical barrier.
The penalty for a violation would be not more than $500 for the first offense, and not more than $1000 for a second and subsequent offenses.
