Missouri Legislation

Missouri's S.B. 149 Helps Primates [2013]

Born Free USA position: SUPPORT

Update: This bill died in 2013.

Bill description: This bill amends the Large Carnivore Act and creates the Non-Human Primate Act. The changes to the Large Carnivore Act will streamline the process for registering large carnivores, helping the state Department of Agriculture to better enforce permitting laws. The Non-Human Primate Act will ban the possession of baboons and great apes.

Background: Born Free USA has been instrumental in introducing and advancing this incremental initiative. In Missouri, keeping non-human primates is currently legal and does not even require a permit. This bill will prevent individuals from owning some of the most dangerous primates and serves to chip away at Missouri’s lack of legal protection for wild animals.
