Born Free USA position: SUPPORT
Bill description: Limits the cruel practice of “fox and coyote penning” — enclosing a fox or coyote in to be killed or harassed by dogs. While it is not a complete ban, this bill takes an important step by prohibiting any competition where any fox or coyote is pursued by dogs and the fox or coyote is in an enclosure, limiting the number of dogs allowed in an enclosure and more. This bill passed the Senate on Feb. 5, 2013, with a vote of 24-16 and now moves on to the state House.
What you can do: Call or e-mail your Virginia state delegate to urge support for Senate Bill 1280. Tell her or him that capturing, transporting, marketing and penning wild animals for dog training is inherently inhumane. Most of penned wild foxes and coyotes suffer and die — literally torn apart by the dog pack. Pitting domestic canines against their wild cousins is ethically indefensible, no matter what size the enclosure.
