Victory in Oregon! HB 2838 Bans Shark Finning

Born Free USA position: SUPPORT

Update (June 2011): This bill was signed into law by Governor John Kitzhaber on June 16, 2011.
The new law bans the sale, trade, possession and distribution of shark fins, but reflects amendments made to the bill to exempt the following: 1) fins legally take from spiny dogfish; and (2) "sport" fishermen and fish processors with valid licenses.

Final version of the bill, as signed into law.

Bill description: House Bill 2838 would prohibit individuals from possessing, selling, offering for sale, trading or distributing shark fins. The bill would allow people to keep (but not sell, offer to sell, trade or distribute) shark fins possessed prior to the bill’s enactment.
