SB 1153 Would Allow Wild Turkeys to be Killed as “Nuisances” [2004]

API Position: OPPOSE

Update: Unfortunately, this bill was passed by both the Senate and Assembly and the Governor signed it into law on 09/10/04.

Bill Description: This bill would expand existing law relating to the destruction of “nuisance” wildlife by allowing wild turkeys to be killed by private individuals. If passed, this bill would require the California Department of Fish & Game to issue a permit if the landowner shows “satisfactory” evidence of damage or “immediately threatened” damage. However, the bill does not describe what constitutes “satisfactory” evidence of damage nor does it define what is meant by “immediately threatened” damage.
