Born Free USA at CITES
Born Free USA's participation in these global wildlife trade issues is fundamental to the survival of countless imperiled species worldwide. We play a leading role in the Meetings of the Conference of the Parties to CITES, as well as the annual meetings of the CITES Animals Committee and Standing Committee, the scientific and implementing bodies for the Convention.
Born Free USA has a proven track record of success within CITES. Born Free USA staff are looked to as experts by members of the international media, other non-profit organizations, and the delegates who represent governments in attendance.
Born Free USA's operations are targeted toward success at CITES meetings, where we lobby delegates to support conservation of wildlife, talk to the media about all relevant issues, post daily updates and video blogs at our CITES Tracker about what's happening at the meeting, and fight in many other ways for animals in need.
Further, Born Free USA helps coordinate the activities of an international coalition working strictly on CITES issues — the Species Survival Network (SSN). SSN has nearly 80 member organizations from approximately 30 countries. Born Free USA Chief Executive Officer Will Travers and Executive Vice President Adam Roberts both serve on the SSN board and chair specific operational aspects of the network. Our work together facilitates capacity-building for organizations in developing countries, which otherwise might not have the knowledge or resources to allow for full participation in CITES. As such, we help give these individuals a clear voice in advocating for the protection of their indigenous wildlife. Together, we work tirelessly to protect all animals in trade.
