Keep Wildlife in the Wild Month:
For the past several years we celebrated Keep Wildlife in the Wild Week in late June. This time around, we declared all of June to be Keep Wildlife in the Wild Month!
Learn and Act
Throughout Keep Wildlife in the Wild Month, special Action Alerts highlighted our five major campaigns. We briefly described each campaign's latest developments — what today's challenges are, and what Born Free USA is doing to tackle them.
Below are links to those Action Alerts. Please consider passing them along to friends and relatives!
- Thursday, May 31: Introduction
- Thursday, June 7: International Wildlife Trade
- Thursday, June 14: Trapping and the Fur Trade
- Monday, June 18: Animals in Entertainment
- Thursday, June 21: Exotic "Pets"

We asked that you send us a candid picture you took of any animal who lives in the wild and you could win our top prize, a Born Free USA merchandise gift basket. There was one key stipulation, however: You must have taken the picture sometime in June 2012! Anne Girton of Edina, MN, captured first place. Find the contest results here. (See last year's winning photographs here.)
We encouraged students to enter our inaugural "How I'm Going Wild for Animals This Summer" essay contest. They submitted short essays (100 words maximum) that went in various directions: they said what wildlife the student hoped to see, and how; detailed what steps the student intended to take to help protect wildlife; shared a story about the student encountering wildlife in the past; or contained anything that shows how the student loves wild animals. It was free-form, it was wild!
We offered first prizes in three age categories: 10 and younger, 11-14 and 15-18. The three winners each received a certificate, T-shirt, plush animal of choice, a $50 gift certificate to Barnes & Noble, and a free "adoption" from the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary. The prize package is valued at $142!
