As a proud member of Born Free USA, a national animal protection organization, I would like to comment about the proposed Forest Planning Rule. I am concerned that the proposal would weaken wildlife conservation standards and accountability. The rule should include mandatory wildlife monitoring, especially for species of special concern, and ensure that decision-makers utilize the best available science and are held accountable for management decisions.
In addition, I believe that individual animals possess interests and are deserving of consideration beyond that of membership in a species. How management decisions and permitted human activities impact animal welfare should be considered as part the Forest Planning Rule. Our national forests are an enduring symbol of our country’s national heritage and provide clean water and air as well as vital wildlife habitat. We owe it to ourselves, our children and the animals to preserve them.
Thank you for your consideration.
