For many of us, dogs, cats, and other animal companions are not "pets," but beloved members of our families. Born Free USA is committed to protecting the companion animals with whom millions of Americans share their lives.
Although "pets" represent a lucrative business, too often companion animals are treated as disposable or as mere merchandise, and far too many are abandoned, exploited, abused, or killed. We are committed to bettering the lives of dogs, cats, and other companion animals, and to giving companion animal guardians and animal advocates the tools they need to make a positive difference.
We address the issue of companion animal well-being in a variety of ways, including fighting the abhorrent practice of pound seizure; encouraging spaying and neutering; opposing breeding and supporting adoption from shelters or rescue groups; educating the public about companion animal health issues such as seasonal safety and nutrition,; strengthening protections for animals sold in retail venues, and much more.
